A musical arts exhibition of ten paintings by the architect Viktor Hartmann (1834-1873) with short “promenades” between the objects.
Musorgsky’s good friend Hartmann had died only 39 years old, and after an exhibition in St Petersburg, Musorgsky composed a piano suite as a posthumous hommage to his friend.
Maurice Ravel made the famous orchestration in 1922, and with his brilliant sense for colours the orchestra painted the pictures in extraordinarily vivid hues.
